Description

Welcome to the Summer / Autumn edition of the Lake District and Cumbria’s best-selling visitor guide

We’re in a celebratory mood for this edition, as we celebrate our 25th year in print! Lakes & Cumbria Today was started by BAT Publishing in 2000 under the stewardship of Stuart Bell and Alistair Thompson, whose extensive knowledge and passion for the Lake District led them to create a publication that would assist visitors in their trip. Offstone took over the reins in 2015, and we like to think that we’re continuing Stuart and Alistair’s dedication to the region by producing an entertaining and informative guide – we hope you agree!

What better way to celebrate than with a refreshed edition which contains a plethora of interviews, features, tips and tricks on getting the most out of a visit to the Lake District and Cumbria – within our pages you’ll find family-friendly attractions, adrenalin-fuelled activities and unique culture, plus tasty food and drink tips, historical wonders and much more besides.

Feature-wise, we’ve got a suitably packed issue. Our friends at Mountain Goat suggest some of their favourite scenic places to visit in the Lakes; we sniff out some of the best places to take your pooch on a dog-friendly trip to the Lakes; Cumbria-based forager Jim Parums advises on how to discover free food on your doorstep; Louise Heaton from The New Bookshop & Coffee Shop in Cockermouth offers her tips for Lake District-inspired books; we check out a new exhibition at Ambleside’s Armitt Museum which celebrates the 70th anniversary of Alfred Wainwright’s groundbreaking guide to the Eastern fells; at Allan Bank there’s another milestone anniversary for one of the Lakes’ most influential guidebooks, written by William Wordsworth; Kendal’s E-Biking Safaris reveal the joys of cycling in the Lake District (without the effort!); we have a brush with royalty as the King of Piel Island (aka Aaron Sanderson) drops by for a chat; much-loved Carlisle museum Tullie House celebrates new gallery spaces and a refreshed look; we seek out some of the best camping and glamping to be had across the region, and uncover the best spots to see our precious wildlife.
