Arriving at the Kankku office in Windermere to be met by our excellent guide Mark we go through the obligatory safety briefing before meeting the man in the driving seat for the next five hours of driving pleasure, Roland Manley. Roland, treated to an-off road experience for his 60th birthday, sets off in our Landrover Defender TD5, full of anticipation for our 60-mile trip, Mark driving the tarmac sections and Roland taking control on five trails along the route.
A ferry ride and a short drive brings us to the start of our first trail through a forest where a slightly bumpy initial stretch has me wondering what all the fuss is about. Then I note that up ahead the trail is blocked by boulders. Now, for you and I and our city saloon car, that would be the end of the drive, but not in this vehicle. Under Mark’s instructions we’re up and over in no time and, bouncing around in the back with the Landrover at extreme angles, my first off-road driving experience is getting lively.
Our next route takes us to a more technical trail and Mark has to leave the vehicle twice to check the lie of the land and fill in potholes. If I thought the previous trail was bumpy then this is off the chart and I have real reservations about the ability of any vehicle to pass what can only be described as a small rock face. At a sharp angle with a 20ft drop to a stream, the adrenalin pumps as we edge forward. A combination of power and skill gets us to the top where, plateauing at 1,000ft, we park up to take in some incredible lake and mountain views – just reward for the hair-raising journey.
Onwards we go for a pie and chip pit stop and then on again to our next trail where we get out to take in stunning mountain and fell views before tackling a a 45 degree pass through a narrow valley, the Landrover slipping effortlessly down the obstacles placed in its way.
As we head to the final trail and our journey home I reflect on a truly magnificent way to see the Lake District. From moors to lakes, with mountains, off-road trails, lovely villages and fine pubs thrown in, it really is a unique experience. Next time, I’m in the driving seat.
Try a five-hour experience like we did from £285 per vehicle (from £75 per person) or a two-hour drive from £175 per vehicle (from £45 per person)
